Church

Boomers have been returning to church, and I guess I'm proof of that. .As I became an adult, a relationship with God became important. I was baptized at the age of 28. I never thought I'd be Baptist, but here I am! Never say Never. I joined Kirkwood Baptist Church, and my preconceptions about Baptists were slowly destroyed. Kirkwood Baptist is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. We are faithful to traditional Baptist principles such as local church autonomy, and the individual member's freedom to interpret the Bible. We have women on the ministerial staff, and have ordained women as deacons for 35 years. This is anathema to many of the 'fundamental' Baptist types. The congregation, through church committees, is involved in everything. The corollary to this is that you need an active lay leadership in the church, because the church committees are the lifeblood of everyday activities. We've got an extremely strong music ministry, and this is important to me. We recently installed a new 42 rank pipe organ.

If you're interested in joining a church, where you can be an active member, be involved in decisions, interpret the Bible freely, I'd suggest you check out a CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) affiliated church in your area.

Sunday school - this is for kids, right? Wrong. Sunday School has been the best part of church for me. In Sunday School I've done Bible study with people my own age, in the same life situation I'm in. I've asked all the dumb, and maybe even heretical questions. I've been accepted for who I am, and been encouraged for who I might be.
